Editor's note:  When shopping for parts, don't be afraid to ask around for the best price.  Prices can vary enormously from one dealer to another.  Don't assume parts are rare and must cost an arm and a leg from the first shop you contact.

Subject: "Hillman – " Spare Parts Service...How do you rate your local Rootes Dealer?

Hi all,
{snip}   My expiriences are Chris Bowden in New Zealand, he is a good operater, knowlegeable, helpful, easy to deal with, affordable prices.
{Comments about another dealer removed at Jim's request.}
What do others think?  I know you can't please everyone in bussiness, but some dealers have more happy customers than others.  That's what I strive for.  Those in USA how do rate the service of Sunbeam Specialities, Imported Auto (yes they are Hillman listers, they must be good), Victoria British, Kip Orphan Auto?
And you in Europe, How do you like Speedy Spares, Alpine West Midlands, Rootes Parts Service and others?
Greetings, Jim in Melbourne

I'm not in Europe but I've dealt with Alpine West Midlands several times.  They are very helpful and ship promptly but are quite expensive compared to some of the other places I've since checked out (Speedy Spares for one).  I just ordered some transmission seals and gaskets from Sunbeam Specialties and found them to be very helpful on the phone and thought the prices seemed reasonable.

Jim et al.
I've been accumulating Alpine bits for years and from all over the place.  What's important to me is –
1 Someone who knows what I have and can send the right bit first time,
2 Availability, I'd rather not chase parts at sellers who are unlikely to have them because of a small range
3 Reasonable price

I enjoy dealing with you Jim because you meet these criteria, and also because I can just email you about stuff – email and the internet is a really convenient way to get stuff.  Of course, if I can buy stuff by walking into Repco or Super Cheap (which I can sometimes) or get generic things like wheel bearings at the bearing shop I will, but it's becoming increasingly difficult.

Peter Rudland in Sydney is always helpful for Alpine bits or advice on them; Auto Spares Galore in Melbourne have given me good service.  I've imported stuff from Alpine West Midlands and had good service but that was ages ago when the $A was worth over 50p

Cheers Jim and keep up the good work

Oh, just one further note.  I have never dealt with Victoria British in the USA but have heard some ... er .. 'discouraging' reports about them on the Alpine list.

Vic,

I had meant to ask about "Spares Galore".  I have dealt with them in the past and they were kind of hit or miss.  Supposedly they had a huge inventory of old Rootes parts acquired from ex-Hillman dealers throughout Australia.  Have you visited them?  What do they have?  Prices?

Thanks,

Jan

Jan,

I've dealt with them a few times over the years and they've always been pretty good at knowing what I was after and supplying the right bit – I had one problem with them 2 years back with a piston but it was understandable and they fixed it quickly at no extra cost to me.  The only thing I wanted once that they weren't able to supply was the correct overdrive switch.

I'm not sure of their inventory size.  They changed their name from Hillman Spares to Auto Spares a while back and I think they now carry quite a bit of stuff for other old British cars.  They are 700 kilometres from me, in Melbourne, I visited them once and they seemed to have stuff for BMC, Rovers (real ones only, not Hondas) etc.  It was a reasonable size building, not huge by any standards – there were 3 or 4 Hunters out front, probably for dismantling.  I'd taken my indicator switch to get the right bits to repair it and the bloke wandered off out the back with it, cleaned it up, put the bits in, tested it to make sure it worked and brought it back, no charge other than the parts.

They seem to have a fairly low key approach and the owner can seem a bit grumpy at times but that's just his way.  Prices have always seemed fair to me.

Perhaps Jim (also in Melbourne) can offer some comment on their inventory?

Umm, isn't this the company owned by Norm Withers – father of "our" Jim Withers of Classic Cars, and with which Jim was previously associated before striking out on his own?

I may be totally wrong (I often am).

Hi Ron, Vic and others,
Yes my dad Norm Withers raced Imps back in the late 1960s, then went in to bussiness with Imp Spares and Repairs, which later became Hillman Spares and Repairs around 1972 when Chrysler Australia stopped making Hunters and sold off surplus parts.  I help out on Saturdays and School Holidays then joined full time after leaving School in 1980.  This continued until 1995 when my new stepmother suggested it was time for me to move on.  They wanted me out of the way to do their own thing.  The customer service went downhill and the prices went uphill.  For me it was one door closing and another door opening.  I started my own bussiness, JW Classic Car Parts.  It was challenging but succesful enough and I still enjoy providing parts not readily avalable elsewhere.  Happy customers are what I strive for and if I make a little money here or there well that's a bonus.  So now my Dad is going through his 2nd divorce and I still go in help out sometimes.  But how they rate for customer satisfaction I will leave that for others to judge.
Greetings, Jim

Jim,

Then that has to be your Dad's Imp (racing number A62) pictured on page 134 of Bill Tuckeys "Australia's Greatest Motor Race" (the original 1981 edition).  This was in the 1968 race, I can clearly see the "Imp Spares and Repairs" sign on the rear mudguard.

HCCSA Webmaster's footnote :
Amongst the clubs in southern Australia, Jim Withers has a very good reputation for friendly and helpful service.  I haven't heard any adverse comments at all.  I met Jim for the first time at All British Day in the Adelaide Hills on 13th February 2005.  He'd brought a station wagon full of parts across from Melbourne, and set up a stall with minimal signage – so little that I walked past without knowing whose it was.  After asking friends where Jim was, I returned to see him helping a potential customer find a part at another dealer's stall (where it would more likely be found).  In his usual low-key approach to life, he didn't ask for this photo to be taken, but co-operated without hesitation when I asked for permission to take it and post it here.

Months later, Jim has offered some reproduction tail light lenses for sale on eBay :

Thanks Buddy,
Is there any reason that these lenses are less than what one should use?  I don't care about show quality.  I want a fun driver that I can get on the road for a modest amount of money.

Steve,
JWClassic Auto Parts sell product at reasonable prices and there is nothing wrong with generic or cloned parts he provides and he is being open by offering this detail beforehand.  He likes to help the movement, not bleed it as some sellers might, so the quality of his product is fine and he could increase the price to what you want to pay if you like to pay more!  His service also is top stuff.

Steve,

I can confirm this endorsement.  I have bought stuff from Jim for about half the price quoted by a supposed 'discount' auto parts place – identical parts, same manufacturer.

Cheers, Vic

Hi All,  I just want to comment on what a great asset to the list Linden is.   I recently had the opportunity to meet her in person and both the Knowledge and warmth that she has are astounding.  I just wanted to let everyone know, If you have a chance to stop in and see her or purchase parts from her, Do it.  It will put a smile on your face much as it did mine.
Thanks Linden for being a part of this list.      Doug Edwards

Hi, gang,
While enjoying the Route 66 Rendezvous in San Bernardino Saturday, we dropped over to Linden's Import Auto Supply, and I must tell you what a terrific lady we have here on the Hillman list.  She is as knowledgeable and professional as anyone I've met in the business, and I've been involved since the late '60's.  How refreshing to enter a real parts store, and not be overwhelmed by steering wheel covers, tailpipe extensions, go-carts, and neon lights!  I sincerely recommend that if your travels take you to San Berdoo, you make an effort to drop in and say hello.  Be careful parking, as the City is doing some road work out front.  Thank you, Linden, for your presence and expertise in our strange little community.  ;-)
