Subject: "Hillman – " Rear shocks for Avenger and Hunter

I just picked up and attemped to fit a set of rear shocks, the ones i was supplied are not the correct ones.  So the question is this, i seem to have found the right part number for an avenger Monroe 110-061.  The part i have is a Monroe 110-793 which appear to be a Hunter shock?  Anyone know what i am looking at/for here?

Hmm, a look at the Monroe Australia site only lists:

Super Minx rear 15-0060+ GT Gas w/- Reflex Shock Absorber

Minx and Husky front 110-654 Front Original Hydraulic Shock Absorber

On the International Monroe
http://www.fmsolutions.nl/tennecoauto/monroe2003/index.html site the Hillman, Commer, and Sunbeam pages crash.  But the Humber Sceptre page loaded:

SCEPTRE MK III 74–>76 Shock part no. R1004

I've got some new Tokico gas shocks in the garage for the Hunter rear but they aren't Monroe.  However, the part no. is (for cross-reference purposes) G2341

Avenger/Cricket:

Monroe Sensa-Trac 5802
Gabriel Gas Ryder Featuring 'VST' 69604

Bolt in.  Use Carriage Bolts since the OEM shocks have flanges with Studs and the replacments do not.

Subject: "Hillman – " Shock Absorbers (dampers) for Hillmans

This message forwarded by the Hillman List.

I was at the local auto parts store this afternnon (Super Cheap for Aussie readers) and had a flick through their Gabriel shock absorber catalogue.

I found Gabriel list the following parts nos. for Hillmans – and best of all for US readers, some of the part nos. fit Jeeps CJ5, CJ6 and CJ7, 1958-60 Pontiac Bonneville, Laurentianne (spelling?), Catalina etc (Super Minx 81147 if I wrote correctly.  Some shocks were made in the USA.

Hunter Front Strut Hydrailic p/n 44885, strut cushion p/n 141269 Hunter Station Wagon Rear Gas p/n 81800 or 69617 (In stock – US made)

76-80 Avenger Rear p/n 42159, front p/n 44771 Hydraulic/Air

Super Minx Rear p/n 42141 Hyd/Air; 81147 Gas

Worth checking out.

If I'd had more time, I'd have check all the cross listings.  Some of the above shock fit a wide range of cars. e.g., Holden commercials, Toyotas, Jeeps, etc.

Wait.....

I've just checked http://www.gabriel.com/ProductFinder.aspx?action=WUG in the USA and there are 6 pages of fits for the 81147 (Super Minx shock) ranging through common US vehicles, e.g. Ford F100 to Jap vehicles including Land Cruisers!

The bad news is that the other numbers don't show up on the US website.  It looks like I'm gunna have to go back and write them all down (sigh).

Oh, I do have the Tokico number for the Hunter sedan rears – I have a new set in the garage.  All I need now is Hunter.

Further to this email, I had look at the http://www.monroe.com.au website and found Hillmans are listed there (but I had to turn off my firewall security to get the search function to work).

Monroe:

Super Minx
Rear GT Gas w/- Reflex Shock Absorber p/n 15-0060+  Ride height: Standard, Lowered, Raised

Husky and Minx
Husky incl. P/Van, Only Sedans and Station Wagons
Front Original Hydraulic Shock Absorber p/n 110-654 Ride height: Standard

I can't get onto the US Monroe site at the moment

It appears that 1960-67 Cadillac front and rear shocks MIGHT fit the Series I-IIIC Minx and Series I & II Husky.  Worth checking out!

As I mentioned, it appears that AC Delco part number 20829 fits the Series I-IIIC Minx front and Husky I&II front.  That part number is actually the Advance Auto Part number and is a gas filled shock.  A pair of them are currently on the front of my Minx.  What I am not sure of is the that the shocks are made by AC Delco, they might be Monroe.  In either case, you can buy them from Advance Auto Parts in the USA for about $12 each (less when they have a sale).

For rears, use 1968 Mustang.  I was tempted to get a set of Gabriel air shocks for the rear.

The combination of radial ply tires and gas shocks improves the handling of the Minx way beyond anything I experienced back in the sixties!
