The most basic type – a simple twist-on cap.


The short cable should be tethered to the fold in the filler neck, to prevent the cap from being lost.

It looks like an air-tight design.

The generic cap below is definitely air-tight.


This hinged cap/filler neck assembly gives a tight seal.


Above: Some unrelated parts at the front of the petrol tank – 3 is a flexible breather tube whose
other end is affixed to the car body above the differential, 4 is an elbow adapter (short metal
tube press-fitted into a threaded piece that screws into the tank), 5 is a 3/8" fibre washer.


I bought this locking cap from a Chrysler dealer in 1972.  It's probably not 100%
air-tight due to need for the locking mechanism to penetrate all of the way through.
However, it's still a high quality item that doesn't leak when the car is parked uphill.
I'd buy a 6 pack of these if they were available today.
